Turn Notations

R-right face

L-left face

U-top face

D-bottom face

F-front face

B-back face

THESE RULES APPLY TO ALL CUBES

A capital letter alone means to turn the face CLOCKWISE 90 DEGREES. for example, F would be to turn the front face clockwise 90 degrees. (R L U D F B)

A capital letter followed by a prime ( ' ) symbol means to turn the face COUNTER-CLOCKWISE 90 DEGREES.  (R' L' U' D' F' B' )

A capital letter followed by a 2 means to turn the face 180 DEGREES. (R2 L2 U2 D2 F2 B2)

x-turn the entire cube as if you are doing a R turn.

x'- turn the entire cube as if you are doing a L turn.

y-turn the entire cube as if you are doing a U turn.

y'- turn the entire cube as if you are doing a D turn.

z-turn the entire cube as if you are doing a F turn.

z'- turn the entire cube as if you are doing a B turn.

The above rules are the same for x2, y2, and z2 turns.

THESE RULES APPLY TO 3X3 AND LARGER

M- Turn the slice between L and R, in the same direction of an L turn. (M' and M2 turns follow the above rules)

A capital letter followed by a "w" means to turn the outer TWO layers of the side. (Rw Lw Uw Dw Fw Bw)

Therefore, a 3Rw would be to turn the outer THREE layers, and vice versa.

THESE RULES APPLY TO 4X4 AND LARGER

A lower case letter is to turn the second layer of the face, so a "r" would be to turn the inner right layer clockwise 90 degrees. (r' and r2 turns follow the above rules)

Therefore, a "3r" would be to turn the THIRD layer of the right face, and vice versa.
